SUP on Lake Garda
SUP can give to anyone the chance to know Garda Lake and make sport at the same time.
Stand up paddling (better known as SUP) which has been rediscovered nowadays, has ancient roots. This sport combines a surf boarding and a paddling. Rowing is made while standing on the board.
It is rapidly taking over due to its accessibility, in fact everyone can learn how to practice this outdoor activity as it is easy, pleasing and incredibly funny. It can be performed all year long. There is only one condition: being a good swimmer.
Sport lovers really have to bear in mind that SUP is also performed in absence of wind by windsurfers and kitesurfers as a training activity. Be sure that SUP is anything but boring!
There is nothing better to keep in good shape, as SUP allows to train the whole body, improve your balance and posture and, as any activity of this kind, it can help you feel stronger and healthier both physically and mentally.
Flat water and absence of wind are the best conditions for SUP on lake Garda especially up north. This means waiting for sunset, when the wind dies down and there are just few people around. But, if you are already expert you can practice it all day long, even if winds and waves could make your performance a bit more tricky.
SUP is a crossover activity. Thanks to this water sport you can cruise along the coasts. Watching the beaches, the small hamlets, the bays or just the water meeting the rocks while standing on a paddle offer a unique perspective. It is certainly worth trying!
Lake Garda has many appealing bays and suggestives waterfalls that you wouldn’t notice while driving on the main street (Via Gardesana). SUP is a new chance to know this territory from a new point of view. You will never forget this as you will feel like walking on water.
SUP also allows you to get in touch with nature and especially water!
Many schools on Lake Garda can provide you with lesson and equipment to hire.
What I suggest is taking an introductory lesson or asking for advice, if you feel like paddling with some friends to experience the undiscovered corners of this amazing territory!
Canoeing on Lake Garda
All the best things I wrote on SUP are valid for canoeing as well but, the kind of training is totally different just because with canoeing you move while sitting.
Don’t be scared as all canoes used here are closed so, in case of falling, you just dive and swim in the lake. This is definitely refreshing especially in hot summer days! Canoeing is also used for cruising along the coasts, but in this case the contact with water is even closer, as you do not stand on your feet.
Nothing better to enjoy the sunset: the lake is quiet, the wind and the waves fade away, the silence... the light becomes softer showing many different and marvellous shades. After living these moments you could not live without canoeing anymore!
As I said for SUP, if you are not an expert, you should take a few lessons just to get the basic notions to feel safe and enjoy. If you need to rent the equipment just ask one of the many kite and wind surf school present in the area.
