Sun, water and air. The 3 elements of nature that helped us to carry out this carefully planned work that began early this summer. An ambitious project that aims to collect funds in order to invest them in restoration and conservation of the old paths of Mount Baldo.
October 15th 6.30 a.m. the daybreak arrives together with us in località Paina in Malcesine on the shores of Lake Garda. The sun strokes slowly the hills of Mount Baldo waiting to be conquered. We are ready for the first edition of Lake Garda Mountain race. Everybody is in position: the organisers and athletes share the same goal, their desire to reach up high. The 2.000 meters are our goal! There are 150 participants from all over Europe: Norway, Sweden, Great Britain, Austria, Germany and Italy.
At 8.30 start the first 2 categories: Nordic Walking and Exercise (the non competitive one). The beauty of Mount Baldo is overrun by around seventy athletes. They arrive at 1.700 above see level after they have touched the water of the biggest lake of Italy. A gesture that will become the symbol and the tradition of this event (touch water and sky, says our slogan ).
At 10.30 start the gladiators of the mountain which conquer the 1.700 meters and the 2.000 meters above see level. There are 47 athletes in the Ultimate Running class but only 27 manage to arrive at the finish line. The others decide to stop their endurable race climbing the 1.700 meters near to the cable car station at Tratto Spino.
At 2.132 meters the air becomes denser and nature offers us a breathtaking view from the peak Pozzette. A beautiful sunny day lets us admire the majesty of Lake Garda from mount Baldo.
But the time to admire all this beauty is limited: after only 1 hour 36 minutes and 30 seconds arrives the winner. His name is Franco Torresani, or better, Don Franco Torresani, a parish priest near Trento. People call him the flying priest. It seems that he stroke the mountain with his run light as a feather arriving first at the Pozzette peak crossing his Stairway to Heaven. Born in 1962, he has been standing on the mountain race world master podium for 7 consecutive years. Moreover he won many Italian and European mountain race prices.
Cristiano Campestrin, born in 1972, arrives second with a great time 1 hour 38 minutes and 25 seconds. The third is an international athlete who comes from Austria: Peter Gross, crossing the finish line in 1 hour 45 minutes and 26 seconds. Even the ladies launch themselves courageously in this adventure. First arrives Lorenza Beatrici in 2 hours. The second woman is a local athlete: Luisa Danti who manages to cross the finish line in 2 hours 28 minutes and 54 seconds.
At the end of the race everybody enjoyed the pasta party and the price giving near to a cosy old fireplace organised in Caserma, an ancient military building in Tratto Spino. At 7 p.m. the day ends at Speck Stube where the organisers together with the participants celebrated the end of the first edition of Lake Garda Mountain Race.
The organisers would like to thank to all the sponsors and the volunteers that contribute to this event, in order to make everything run so smoothly. Through our website we will inform you the date of the second edition.
